February Music

Hello everyone. I have not done a music review in a while because I have not bought anything. However, yesterday I bought the Kings Of Leon album, Aha Shake Heartbreak. I also bought the Allman Brothers 20th Century Masters CD earlier this month.

I was on a weekend trip back home and I saw the Kings Of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak on sale at Best Buy and I had heard pretty good things about them, so I decided to pick it up. For those of you that have not heard of them, they are kinda like a cross between The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand with a southern rock background. “The Bucket” is the current single off the album. It is a good song but there are better songs on the album. For those who do plan on getting this album, I must warn you that it is definitely deserving of the parental advisory sticker on the front of the album. If you’re looking for a pretty graphic song, listen to “Soft.” Anyway, for the most part I enjoy the album, so I am going to give Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings Of Leon a 7.

After I watched the Grammys I went through a bit of a southern rock phase. For those of you did not see the Grammys, there was a performance by The Allman Brothers and Lynard Skynard. On one of my biweekly trips to Wal Mart I noticed The Allman Brothers – 20th Century Masters was on sale for $8. After having done some further research I noticed that the band had quite an extensive history. The Allman Brothers went through many different phases and this compilation sums it up pretty well. In the beginning Greg and Duane Allman were writing the songs, Dickie Betts played guitar, and Butch Trucks played drums. Duane was one of the best guitar players to ever live. He did a varity of different things, including side guitar on Derek and The Dominos. Tragically, Duane died in a motorcycle accident. Greg would later testify against their road manager, for drug possession. After that the band no longer wished to work with Greg. Carrying on the name of the band, Dickie Betts then became the new frontman, elevating his role and Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule) was introduced as the new lead guitarist. It was then that that Betts wrote “Ramblin’ Man,” the band’s most successful single. Greg Allman later reunited with the band. Since there have been multiple breakups and reunions. Today, Betts still tours with the band, but they are most comprised of new members and Derek Trucks (Son of Butch). Derek is the first guitarist to really live up the expectations that was left when Duane passed away. So, go get an Allman Brothers album. This greatest hits album definitely gets a 10.

PS: Be on the look out for Weezer’s soon to be single Beverly Hills They are already making the video.

  6. "The southern rock outfit Kings of Leon is comprised of the brothers Caleb (guitar), Nathan (drums), and Jared Followill (bass). While traveling across America’s heartland during the late ’80s and ’90s with their evangelist father, the boys listened to the Rolling Stones and Neil Young. By the time Kings of Leon settled in Nashville in 1998, making music a career was already underway."
