new deal? more like, communism!

Yeah I don’t want Chris on my back about writing this thing. (Since when did he start handing out writing assignments? And why is he having me write about things no one our age normally cares about?)

So I think we all know that in about 10 years or so we’re going to have major issues paying off Social Security to all of the ageing Baby Boomers (my parents generation). According to Wodicka by the year 2013 (don’t quote me on the year) about half of the national budget will go to people 65 or older. This is due to paying off SS, Medicare, Medicaid and other such programs. In case you’re unsure what this means: that’s nuts. This basically isn’t going to happen, which means one of two things will/must happen.

One: At some point SS will hit a brick wall and we’re going to have to make very big changes to it immediately almost certainly causing people not to get the amount of money they were suppose to get.

This would probably be a bad thing because old people get touchy about receiving their SS money. They can’t live without their 500 dollars a week. Just think if SS was never around they probably would have had more money than that in the long run, but shhh don’t tell people that you never make back as much as you put into it. Well actually maybe they wouldn’t have more money in the long run since a lot of people don’t even take retirement into account because they thing the government takes care of them when they’re old. Yeah, you can live on 500 a week…
(I don’t actually know how much people get from SS a week. I believe it’s around 500.)

Two: We make some changes now so that we have enough money to last through the Baby Boomers. (AKA prolong the death of SS)

Recently President Bush has proposed a partial privatized SS plan. This means that the government would give us access to some of the money that we put into SS and invest it into certain to stock market. I’m almost positive that people would be limited to certain mutual funds so that it would be difficult to lose everything very quickly.

Now even though this is not what I would like to see happen to SS. (I want it dead NOW! Screw the repercussions. I think we can take the old people.) It is a pretty good start because it allows people some control of their hard earned money. It also helps the government increase their funds for SS so that we don’t all die because paying old people is more important than defense, highway maintenance and water purification, ext.

Another thing I would like to see happen is that the age be risen at which people start to receive SS checks. Back when SS was started being 65 was really old. Being 65 now isn’t. Now I’m not positive but I believe that 65 may have been older than the life expectancy of the average person. That means that we’re now paying many many more people than SS was ever designed to cover. Hence why it’s failing us so quickly.

Some other ideas that have been kicked around to help SS have been to raise the amount of income that is taxable for SS. This means that if someone makes 200,000 a year, only 100,000 of it are taxed for SS. This sounds like a fine idea to me. Just don’t make the rate higher for people just because they make more.

Another was to not allow people that are very financially stable to receive SS checks. NO! This is not right because those people have been forcefully had their money taken away from them so that they would get it when they’re older. I don’t care what you say about how they may not need it. When you start taking money away from the better off just to give it to people that are less better off that’s when I start yelling COMMUNISM!

Now as you’ve probably notice I’m extremely hostile towards SS. The main reason for this is because I don’t like the government taking the money that I’ve earned and then slowly feeding to back to me when I get old. I’m not a dumb ass. I can manage my money well enough so that I don’t need to rely on the government during retirement. I don’t needed to be babysat when I’m old getting my weekly allowance from them. I didn’t get allowance as a child; I don’t want it when I’m old.

Well since I’m so strongly against SS you would probably think that I’m a typical Republican who is against Medicare and Medicaid too. (What am I talking about? No one is even still reading this, aside from Tim Shea and Wodicka) But if I could have it my way I would completely get rid of SS in an un-nice fashion and actually raise the taxes for Medicare and Medicaid. What can I tell you? I want to be a doctor.

Now I don’t really know why Wodicka made me write this, but I have a feeling he was holding a napkin and trying not to get involved while reading it.

Note: It is 5:28 in the morning. I am tired. I barely read this over, if at all. Give me some slack.

    I said no such thing.

I said half of the budget would go to those over 65. That includes, among other things, Medicare.

  2. Umm yea social security is a bad thing. Lets like stop doing that.

  3. "I said no such thing."

Well you did say something like that.

    I just didn’t includ everything.

    Fixed.
