Draft grades

Draft grades are silly.

From www.jetnation.com:

Many draft publications have been rating the Pats draft an A’ because, well, Belichick did it. While that argument certainly holds some water, when you look at this draft objectively, it’s a mess. Belichick enters each draft like a rich kid entering a Porsche dealership. He doesn’t care what he’s going to pay for it: if he sees something he wants, he takes it, regardless of value. Only Belichick could burn draft picks on players that were probable UDFA’s and still merit a passing grade. Not here. Looking at this draft objectively, he took a nice OG prospect in Logan Mankins (about 30 picks too early), a small, unspectacular DB in Ellis Hobbs in the third (about 3 rounds early), and a SS in James Sanders (two rounds early). Will Belichick turn these guys into players? Yes. Will he still have the Pats competing for rings despite the fact that he reached for every pick in every round? Yes. Does that make this draft an A’? No.
Well done.

I don’t see how people get on the Jets’ case for picking a kicker when a kicker won the Pats two of their three Super Bowls.

Switching to baseball—the Mets are in pretty bad shape. Trachsel, Ishii, and Benson are all on the DL, Zambrano can’t pitch, Heilman is only good half the time, and Glavine looks awful. Reyes, the leadoff hitter, has a grand total of zero walks on the year. I think the #1 and #2 hitters combine for a .288 OBP. That’s like half of what Jeter has.

At least the Knicks are in the Phil Jackson sweepstakes. Who wouldn’t want to coach a team that features the self-proclaimed best point guard in basketball and the supporting cast of five undersized power forwards, a shooting guard with a sub-.400 FG%, a small forward that epitomizes “underachiever,” and a backup guard who was once compared to Michael Jordan back in the 90’s?

  1. Well, a kicker didn’t really win them it, in my opinion. But, I couldn’t imagine them winning without him. Kind of confusing. :)

It’s like the Yankees. Mo and Jeter didn’t win it for us, but I think that without either one of them, it would have been hard for me to see them winning.

With the Pats, you could say Viniteri
or Brady. Hard to see them winning without Brady. Hard to see them winning without Viniteri.

  2. Well, Chad Pennington is the poor man’s version of Tom Brady, so the Jets already have that covered.
