How to make music.

As some of you may know, my roommate and I are in a band. Sort of. We play an eclectic blend of acoustic, folk, and death metal. Occasionally, we’ll also go into gospel. If you’re ever in South Bend, we’ll play you a private concert.

Anyway, when we want to write a song, we sit down and say to ourselves, “What band do we want to rip off today?” Now that might make us seem unoriginal, but bands do it all the time. Just ask Interpol (Joy Division), the Strokes (The Velvet Underground), or the Vines, the Burning Brides, or Nine Black Alps (Nirvana).

One of derivative rock’s up-and-coming bands, Wolfmother, has decided that they don’t like the Darkness, that “band” that some would accuse of unoriginality, among other things. NME.com has the story.

Wolfmother is basically Black Sabbath for the 21st century, just a lot less relevant.

Wolfmother drummer declared, “I don’t have any Zeppelin albums.”

I don’t believe him.

Time to listen to some more Nickelback…

  1. Wow! For a band like Wolfmother to bad mouth the Darkness is insane. The Darkness have blended sounds of Queen and many other bands, however they have their own sound. It is also a trademark of theirs to be funny. The Darkness are also very talented. Wolfmother does not have a style. They are an exact blend of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. I mean really. I would not be able to tell the difference between a Wolfmother song and a song from Black Sabbath had they came out at the same time. Wolfmother is not one to coment on a band’s style.

  2. And in today’s music world, how many bands are actually "original"?

  3. That’s Julian’s Birthday is a pretty original band.

    Ahem.

  4. No they don’t. They just try to use the word "eclectic" to try to fool people.

  5. they’re*
and we all know who uses that word and is nothing but a poser…
