C-wod’s Guide to Music: Issue 1
Well, I’m far from being a hipster but shall try my best to enlighten—ahem, introduce you to new and/or good music. In this new weekly feature, not only will I have an excuse to update and write about my life’s passion, but I’ll also share some cool bands with you. Obviously, if you’re at c-wod.com, you either write for us, or you found this site from BlogExplosion/Blog Mad and will never read any of this.
Bands of the moment:
65daysofstatic: The Scot introduced them to me awhile ago. If you’re into frenetic, instrumental techno-post-rock, they’re worth a listen. It’s probably not for everybody. My two friends always give me odd looks when I listen to 65dos, so be warned.
Pretty Girls Make Graves: They’re kind of like At the Drive-In, only not as good and fronted by a woman. Overall, I think they’re catchy and energetic. Their new album comes out next week.
The Velvet Underground: Umm, these guys are weird. Even today, 40 years later, they’re just out there at times. I keep listening to “The Gift” because it’s just so matter-of-fact and dark. I know this band is pretty well-known, but it never hurts to revisit them.
Album of the moment:
At the Drive-In – Relationship of Command: I keep listening to this album all the time. It’s so good. The true fans say it’s too polished, and you know what I say to them? I listen to the Foo Fighters and Audioslave.
Proof that I’m not a hipster:
Saturday night, I finally listened to the LCD Soundsystem album. I had seen them live last year but never got around to hearing their studio work. I agree with people who think this album is disgustingly overrated. It’s like one big in-joke for hip indie kids, so that they can be assured of their musical superiority. The songs are mostly hit-or-miss.
Band I get to make fun of thanks to the anonymity of the Internet:
The Killers – Spin named the Killers as their 2005 Band of the Year. According to the logic, if I understand it, you are the band of the year if your singles take over mainstream radio. I bought the Killers’ album and enjoyed it. However, there is no way they were 2005’s top band. Maybe top 20 or something. My friend said, “I think the Killers are overrated.” My response was, “The people who like the Killers a lot are incapable of overrating a band.” I think I was a little harsh, but in my opinion, most of those people—I’m talking about the teenage girls who adore Brandon Flowers—make no real judgments of the actual music.
New albums I would buy tomorrow if I had money:
The Concretes – In Colour
The Flaming Lips – At War With The Mystics
Morrissey – Ringleader Of The Tormentors
Saves The Day – Sound The Alarm
That does it for this edition. Tune in next week. Or not.

I disagree with the scot and agree with Chris. I think the Killers are overrated. They have some good singles, but I thought that album was just average. I bought the album, however it didn’t last long in my car cd player.

in other news weezer is not emo
April 4th, 2006 at 3:19 pm
I never said the Killers were overrated. I just said they weren’t one of the best bands of 2005.
Obviously, that title belongs to My Chemical Romance…

whoa, the velevet underground? who are they?? they sound waaay crazy! and relationship of command!? what a nuts name for a record! Quit beating us over the head with your hipster credentials cwod!!

Yeah, because I’m really going out of my way to name obscure stuff.
April 4th, 2006 at 11:35 pm
Umm, neither the Killers or My Chemical Romance are the band of ‘05.
Weezer is emo!
April 4th, 2006 at 11:46 pm
I was being sarcastic about My Chemical Romance.
Weezer isn’t emo. Pinkerton is the only one of their albums that anyone ever associates with "emo."

The Killers, The Bravery, The Hives, The Vines, etc. are all ridiculously overrated bands.
The Strokes, however, not bad, not bad.
April 6th, 2006 at 11:21 am
If it weren’t for the Killers, nobody would have heard of the Bravery.
The Vines came out with a new CD… Did anybody notice?

i feel bad for craig nicols (vines singer), dude takes a lot of shit. anybody who didn’t at least like "get free" needs to take a long hard look at themself.

i don’t think the hives deserve to be bunched in with all these other bands, they put on one hell of a show, and their second album was surprisingly better than their first
