From Down Under
Sometimes you can’t go wrong with just following what your predecessors did. Well the self-titled debut album from Wolfmother is clearly from that school of thought. They really don’t have much originality to their music, but they have a similar sound to some of the greatest rock n’ roll acts of all time. I think they sound just like Led Zeppelin with a little punch, however they have also drawn a lot of comparison to Black Sabbath. Lead singer and guitar player, Andrew Stockdale seems to frequently imitate both Ozzy and Robert Plant. At first I thought that this was just a cheap way to make money off something you already knew was a success. However, I think they are pure musicians that just want to play the music they like with their own spin. I can respect that. Anyway, Wolfmother first burst on to the Australian (their home country) music scene with a performance at Big Day Out in 2004. Their album has sold well and gotten great acclaim over there and they are just beginning to invade the United States. Their first US single was Dimension, a song that has a very Led Zeppelin like guitar rhythm, with Ozzy sounding lyrics. Currently the video for Woman/Love Train can be seen on MTV’s T-Minus Rock countdown. The video consists of Woman in full and short excerpts of Love Train that amount to about one minute. They should have just made two videos, if you ask me. While both songs are in the neighborhood of 3 minutes on the nose, they do deserve their own videos. White Unicorn was their first single they ever released in Australia. This as well as Minds Eye (which was also released as a single in Australia) comprise two of the longer songs on the album, around the vicinity of five minutes. Other notable songs include Colossal and Joker and the Thief. It really is a great album. A solid return to hard rock acts of the 1970s. I am going to give Wolfmother’s self-titled debut album an 8 out of 10.

I’m not really a fan. Sure, they can play their instruments and would probably make a good Black Sabbath cover band, but I just feel like we’ve heard all this before.

I agree with Chris, I have heard a few of their songs, and they are pretty good, but whenever I listen, I just think "been there, heard that."

Yea, sometimes I find it a little difficult to get through the whole album, but I still think it deserves some praise.
