Siren Festival
On Saturday, I made the trip to Coney Island to see the Village Voice’s annual indie rock festival, the Siren Music Festival. My two friends and I arrived nice and early, snagging a ton of freebies before the bands went on.
Here’s the bands I saw and my thoughts on them, which won’t be enlightening at all:
Deadboy and the Elephantmen – Kind of boring. All of their songs sounded way too alike. Evidently, Rolling Stone gave their debut four stars, but Rolling Stone also had a shirtless Nich Lachey spread awhile back… They seemed like a band that would have guitar solos, but they, in fact, did not have guitar solos.
Priestess – They looked like a cheesy metal band. I only caught part of their set (the end of a drum solo and another song), but they probably were a cheesy metal band.
The Rogers Sisters – Their songs were kind of hit-or-miss. I thought they had some cool stuff in there, but other parts bored me or just didn’t work. Their bassist was insane.
Man Man – These guys were extremely crazy and were probably on some sort of hard drugs. think, in terms of their song structures, you should think The Fiery Furnaces. These guys were all over the place. They didn’t really have any sort of melody going, either. Still, they had energy and were pretty fun, if not always aurally pleasant. AMG has this to say about them: “Philly’s Man Man comes across like Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart collaborating on a klezmer-influenced soundtrack to your scariest nightmare about killer clowns… Most of this stuff is just too damn weird for all but the most experimental music listener.”
Celebration – Boring. Left after one song.
Dirty on Purpose – Good from what I saw. Left after two songs or so.
Tapes N Tapes – I thought they put on a good show. I don’t remember much of it, since I was working on three hours of sleep, but I have a general recollection of a strong set.
The Cribs – They put on a good, crazy show with a lot of energy. Their drummer was pretty nuts.
Art Brut – They’re good and fun. Eddie Argos claims he isn’t being ironic, but I don’t know how much I believe him. And who refers to his band in the third-person? “Okay, Art Brut? Go!”
Stars – They were good, though the sound quality was pretty weak. Torquil Campbell is kind of crazy. He says really weird, random stuff. They only played two songs off of Heart.
I missed sets by Scissor Sisters, She Wants Revenge, The Stills, and Serena Maneesh.
I think my friend is obsessed with the MisShapes DJs.

Hey crazy, I was so there too. Random, I know. It wasn’t planned. I didn’t end up listening to that many bands unfortunately, though I did go on my first roller coaster ride (uh nearly died and definitely loved it). It would’ve been really funny if we had run into each other, too bad.
