My Top Ten List
Here it is, folks. The top ten greatest Cat Stevens (Yusef Islam) songs:
10 – The Wind
“I let my music take me where my heart wants to go…”—- ‘nuff said.
9 – Where do the Children Play? – This is vintage Stevens (Islam). This song builds up to a tremendous crescendo, with a multitude of Yuself Islams crooning by the end. Def a fan favorite.
8 – Peace Train – Great song, made even greater after Cat urged the death of Salman Rushdie. Apparently Yusef found “Haroun and the Sea of Stories” to be a bit offensive.
7 – The First Cut is the Deepest – Who can’t relate to this song? ‘Nuff said.
6 – Hard Headed Woman – Subtle strings in this song make it a Stevens/Islam classic. Who doesn’t want to find a hard-headed woman? I know C-Wod wants one.
5 – Sad Lisa – I decided to be a real rebel and put this one as my number five. I know it’s not on all the greatest hits collections, but Cat evokes some real deep emotion on this cut. I can’t help but weep on occasion just thinking about this song.
4 – Here Comes my Baby – This is great stuff. Yusef Islam delivers a rollicking and spirited performance.
3 – Wild World – Ohhh baby baby it’s a wild world. It’s hard to get by, something something something blah blah, who knows the words. I love this stuff!
2 – Morning Has Broken – I was originally going to put Moonshadow somewhere on this list, but I realized I had excluded Morning has Broken! Needless to say, I kicked Moonshadow off. Those of you who went to Chaminade may recognize this song from morning announcements. Do the brothers know that his name is Yusef Islam?
1 – Father and Son – This song is at the top of my list, and rightfully so. Only Cat could write such heartfelt lyrics – I nearly cried by the end of this bad boy. “For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not” – that is some deep stuff, friends.
In the end, this was a good year for Cat/Yusef. After all, I wrote about him on C-Wod.com, and that’s about the most exposure he’s gotten in the past five years (aside from being banned from flying). And now, if I didn’t already know that the Wodicka family reads this on occasion, I would emphasize my love for Cat with various expletives, but I will refrain. Goodnight world!
